Financial Benefits

• Monthly Living allowance (Carefully consider your financial situation to determine if you're able to commit to serving with Reading Corps) is approximately:

  • $800 (450 hours | 15-17 hrs/week)

  • $1,200 (675 hours | 20-22 hrs/week)

  • $1,600 (900 hours | 28-30 hrs/week)

Education Award

• Tutors receive (after successful completion) an education award to pay back federal student loans, the cost of tuition or other educational purposes. Tutors ages 55+ on their first day of service may transfer the education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child within seven years. 

  • $1,956 (450 hours | 15-17 hrs/week)

  • $2,817 (675 hours | 20-22 hrs/week)

  • $3,697 (900 hours | 28-30 hrs/week)

Student Loan Forbearance

• If a tutor is making payments to a federally-backed education loan, payments may be put into forbearance during their year of service. Upon successful completion of the program, the accrued interest will be paid by the National Service Trust.

Training, Coaching, & Experience in Research-Based Literacy Strategies

• You do not need to be an educator or already have the skills needed to help children learn how to read! Reading Corps is based on the science of how students learn to read. You'll receive all the training and support you need to help students with their skills.

• You'll receive ongoing coaching at two levels: Internal Coach at your assigned school AND a Coaching Specialist.

Professional Skill-Building & Networks

• Reading Corps is part of a larger network of AmeriCorps members across North Dakota.

Commit to 9 Months

• The service term runs from September 3, 2024 - May 31, 2025.

  • After we hire and train a tutor for a school, we rely on that tutor for the whole term of service – no substitutes or replacements. 

Serve 900, 675, or 450 Hours

• Members serving 900 total hours = at least 28 hours per week for a minimum total of 900 hours.

  • Nearly all of these hours are accrued during typical school-day hours.

• Members serving 675 total hours = serve 20 hours per week (four hours a day, five days a week) for a minimum total of 675 hours.

  • Nearly all of these hours are accrued during typical school-day hours.

• Members serving 450 total hours = serve 15-17 hours per week for a minimum total of 450 hours.

  • Nearly all of these hours are accrued during typical school-day hours.

Serve DAILY in a School Setting

• To ensure fidelity, Reading Corps tutors need to meet with their students every day of the school week during normal school hours.

• A consistent schedule throughout the year is required so that students' tutoring schedules are consistent.

Participate in Professional Training

• A hybrid model of training is required - involving online and in-person training (typically starting in early September 8am-5pm). All tutors are required to attend. 

Engage in Your Community

• Reading Corps tutors spend their year viewing their community through the lens of service. They seize opportunities to be involved with community-based service activities, such as volunteering at a library and getting involved on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
